Today Joe & I investigated Mechanicsville, VA including Hanover and Ashland areas. Lots of history from the early 1700 through the civil war era.
Last evening Graci & Rob took us to Polegreen Church historic site- (see pic). This area was found not to long ago by the residence at the time, who found a grave site, so their house was moved and the National Park Service took over the site and erected the shell of what the church would have looked like. Patrick Henry attended this church with is mother Sarah. I'm amazed at how much history is here in Virginia, but when I stop to think of the beginning of the US, well, where else would the states start but on the east coast. The freedom of religion started in this area. Most Americans cherish their freedom of religion - It's because of what happened here that the government adopted the Statute of Religious Freedom in 1786.
Tomorrow we hope to check out the Cold Harbor area where the 7 day battle during the civil war took place. Will let you know what we find out tomorrow.
